LION Foundation and LifeSize Collaborate to Provide Worldwide Distance Learning to Medical Professionals

The LION Foundation chooses LifeSize to provide global education

Created in 2006, the LION Foundation is a non-profit organization with the dedicated mission of promoting medical and surgical continuing education programs. They joined forces with LifeSize in order to develop an interactive, high speed network for otolaryngology professionals working toward furthering their careers. The partnership between the LION Foundation and LifeSize also promotes distance learning with modern videoconferencing technologies.

Professor Dr. Wilko Grolman, Chairman of Otolaryngology and Head-Neck Surgery at the University Medical Center in Utrecht, The Netherlands, is also Vice President of the LION Foundation; he firmly believes that a high quality video conferencing system is vital to the foundation’s success. "As otolaryngologists, we need to be in a continuous process of education. By using video conferencing, we are able to offer participants around the globe direct and interactive access to international experts in the various fields of otolaryngology without time consuming travels."

What They Do

The LION Foundation utilizes a network that can be used for live surgery, panel discussion and formal conferences with any type of presentation. Two types of sites on the network can be defined within the organization:

1. Faculty Site – an "operating theatre" or any site worldwide from which a faculty member of LION will perform live surgery, give a lecture, lead a conference or participate in panel discussion.

2. Distant Site – a conference room or computer anywhere in the world from which delegates will follow the LION session and interact in real time with the faculty.

The LION’s program will include multiple annual scientific events and interactive training sessions to enhance the continuous exchange of ideas and sharing of clinical experience from around the world.

Why They Chose LifeSize

Dr. Wilko Grolman

"One of the most important reasons for selecting LifeSize high definition video systems is the video, image and audio quality – all of which are extremely important while showing people around the world live surgeries. And the bandwidth consumption is very low with LifeSize systems, so while using an international network, it means we can still provide high quality video even if the ‘far end’ does not have unlimited bandwidth access."

An important advantage of implementing LifeSize video conferencing software is the cost savings regarding travel. Because LION member can now communicate via modern technology, there is no need to purchase plane tickets every time an important conference or meeting arises. Furthermore, by decreasing flight-related CO2 emissions, the LION network is of benefit to climate policy by respecting the environment and natural resources.
