12 Days of Geek | Day 12 | Who put the TIE in TIE Fighter?

Q. In Star Wars, what does TIE stand for in “TIE Fighter”?

TIE fighters and other TIE spacecraft are seen throughout the original Star Wars trilogy as well as throughout the expanded Star Wars universe. Other TIE craft include the TIE Advanced, TIE Shuttle, TIE Bomber, TIE Interceptor, TIE Hunter, TIE Mauler, TIE Defender, TIE Clutch, TIE Raptor and TIE Crawler. While some are built for air combat, others are land vehicles.

The common prefix refers to the type of engine used to power the craft. TIE stands for Twin Ion Engine. Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens in theaters tomorrow—but you already knew that. Enjoy the film!
