More Easy Ways to Reduce Your Personal Carbon Footprint – Top Fan Submissions

We hope all of you had a wonderful Earth Day this past Monday, and challenged yourself to tackle one of the behavior changes we recommended in our last blog. We received an outpouring of ideas on other ways to reduce your personal carbon footprint, and wanted to share those with you in this follow-up article.

Create a compost area at your house. Back in the day, well before disposals, this was a common practice. Was a tremendous fertilizer for the garden, too. – Megan

Ditch the plastic water bottles. Buy a reusable water bottle instead; it can go a long way in reducing your carbon footprint. Even though some plastic water bottles are made from recycled material, most are not. – Kurt

Keep your cat indoors. Did you know that domestic cats kill over a billion small birds and animals every year? (One outdoor car averages about 40 kills per year). This upsets the natural predator/prey balance that keeps our environment sound. – Chris

Turn your thermostat up to 78*F/25*C in the summer. Even better, use a system like Nest that monitors your daily behavior and adjusts your thermostat accordingly. On the flip side, you can also use blankets to warm up in the winter rather than your home heating system. – Johnny
