“Keep It Simple, Stupid!”

Chiara Menesatti, Product Marketing Manager

…and we mean that in the nicest way possible.

Leonardo da Vinci famously said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” In a world full of smartphones, smart TVs and even smart watches, it is simply astounding how complicated some of these devices are and yet how simple they are to use. The ironic thing is that users are consistently asking for more and more features, but less and less complexity – which makes solutions like smartphone UIs increasingly difficult to design.

Think about it this way: your smartphone incorporates so many features that it has virtually replaced your need for many household goods:

  • calendar
  • alarm clock
  • map
  • compass
  • phonebook
  • calculator
  • notepad
  • newspaper
  • radio
  • camera
  • shopping list
  • photo album
  • and that’s just to name a few…

What’s truly astounding is that a device that has SO many features feels so intuitive to use. Da Vinci was right; simplicity truly is a work of art.

Now, let’s get to the title of this blog post. “Keep It Simple, Stupid,” is not in-fact something we came up with to make your blood boil or the meaning behind the name of that 70’s arena rock band, “KISS.” It is a principle was first communicated by U.S. naval officers in the 1960s. The principle states that most systems work best if they are kept simple, rather than made complex. Therefore, simplicity should be a key goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided. At LifeSize, simplicity is the name of the game. In fact, earlier this year we launched LifeSize Icon, a video system that is so intuitive and simple to use that it can be controlled with a remote with just a click wheel on it.

With just a click of a button, you are now able to call your peers from a presence-enabled centralized directory, add more people to the conversation, connect to PC, Mac and mobile devices, record your meetings, live stream your training sessions, and much, much more. If you can use Apple TV or Roku, you will find LifeSize Icon Series equally intuitive. Video that works the way you want it to: simply and easily. That’s Smart Video.

How does it work?

All of these features are enabled through a creation of a truly connected device: LifeSize Icon Series and LifeSize UVC application bundles. All of the key applications you need to deliver the most complete collaboration experience to your organization are now pre-configured on server appliances in three sizes -small, medium and large- each designed to provide optimal performance for up to 100, 250 or 500 users. What’s more, the bundles are scalable to grow with your business and protect your investment.

The combination of an intuitive user experience coupled with feature-rich video applications, offered in bundles to fit your organization is just one of the many ways that LifeSize delivers “simple sophistication.”
