Dear Road Warrior: Portable Peggy

Road Warrior

Dear Road Warrior,

I am never in the same place for more than a day. Between flights, hotels, coffee shops and coworking spaces, I am truly “mobile” in every sense of the word. Though I love travel, I need a way to maintain productivity regardless of my location and still keep my sanity. What are your recommendations?

Dear Peggy,

Why don’t you try to recreate a familiar workspace at each location to give yourself some familiarity – the same desk arrangement, same coffee mug, same small framed picture of your family, etc.? That way, no matter where you are – you can focus on work and not be distracted by your change in location. Consistency is key.

Headphones are a great way to block out noise, especially in a café or airport terminal. Using LifeSize® ClearSea™ for video calls on your desktop or mobile phone can really give you a reality check and allow you to see your colleagues face-to-face instead of sending countless e-mails back and forth to make an easy decision.

Taking a dip in a hotel pool, like this one, can help you feel refreshed and rejuvenated while working on the road. (Photo Courtesy of Wikipedia)

Also, allow yourself time for breaks to minimize burn-out. Go for a walk around the park across from your hotel. Go for a swim in the indoor pool or grab a quick lunch at a nearby museum. There are lots of ways to stay productive without the headaches of travel.

Now, flight delays. That’s another story.
