The students, educators and administrators of State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) really have it made. Not only do they attend an educational institution minutes away from the white sand, crystal-clear Florida beaches, they are attending a college that is one of the most technologically advanced in the state; SCF now uses LifeSize solutions for learning, hiring and administrative initiatives on a daily basis.

SCF is the region’s first and largest public college, serving approximately 36,000 college credit students across three different campuses in Bradenton, Lakewood Ranch and Venice. Additionally, the college recently opened a collegiate charter school, educating students in 6th and 7th grade.

Because the three campuses are 40 miles apart, educators and administrators often found themselves commuting back and forth between locations, resulting in wasted time, money and fuel. Beyond that, the college wanted to cut its annual budget by $2 million. Management was desperate for a solution to both problems.

Though the college had used video conferencing before, their systems were outdated and rarely utilized. SCF decided that the best way to solve their travel problems and cut their budget was by upgrading their communications environment and integrating LifeSize endpoints. The college chose the full series of LifeSize® Room endpoints and LifeSize® Video Center – the HD streaming, recording and auto-publishing solution – to meet their specific needs.

As a result of this implementation, SCF is now able to provide online learning classes, eliminate travel between campuses and provide students with an even better education than before. As an added bonus, SCF also realized they could also conduct job interviews using LifeSize technology, a benefit that saved the school approximately $30,000. Additionally, the college itself has experienced unprecedented growth with a 5 percent enrollment increase and savings of $100,000 per year.

The staff at SCF couldn’t be happier. “Instructors can’t get enough of LifeSize technology. It’s an outstanding way to communicate efficiently and with minimal resources,” said Feng Hou, CIO at State College of Florida.
