Lifesize is focused on delivering innovation and connected devices that allow customers to have a seat in their meetings from no matter where they are. In order to do so, we create high quality, business-class endpoints that are purpose-built for small huddle rooms, conference rooms, boardrooms and lecture halls.
One of the technologies we use to develop and test the design of our new endpoints is 3-D printing. While we’ve used 3-D printing for a few years to help us shape the future of our products, the increased availability of 3-D printers has helped us decrease the time to market for new products. What was previously a time-consuming process is now managed closely in-house because of the ability to test and troubleshoot immediately.
Here’s the process:
Once our team has the proof of concept for a product, our engineers are able to sketch the design and capture the model design in an online software tool. While the tool allows us to draw with precision and extensive attention to detail, we need a way to test the build, see the design in person and see how the pieces fit together.
In comes the 3-D printer. We can print prototypes in less than an hour that allow us to examine, adjust and perfect the design. In fact, the rapid growth of 3-D printers has allowed us to test concepts three to four times a day, instead of once every three to four days.
