Networking Before You Need It

NetworkingA recent incident with a family member prompted me to remind candidates that the time to start looking for a new job is long before you need it. Most people find a job they love, settle in, and start doing good work. They remain focused on the task at hand not thinking much about what is going on around them.  So the last thing on their mind is to worry about a potential lay-off or reorganization with their current employer.

Although you were hired to do exactly that, it never hurts to stay appraised of the business climate and stay connected with your network.  I imagine some might think this may create suspicion but that is not the case. Constantly networking with colleagues provides several advantages:

You get to see what your colleagues are up to and exchange information on new technology, get advice on a work or product dilemma, find resources for learning new skills or improving the skills you have, leveraging your knowledge, and bring visibility to your current employer as an employer of choice. As with LifeSize, our employee referrals amount to 40% of all hires!

So, how best to approach this? Make a commitment to look at business networking sites at least once a month such as Linkedin, and connect with like-minded individuals. Do research on technology thought leaders in your industry, and the companies and social networking tools they recommend.  Attend trade association seminars and talk with colleagues.  Be part of your local charity and contribute either on the board or with fundraising efforts.  Attend local mixers dedicated to technology, etc. and socialize with former colleagues, friends and associates at these mutual user or trade groups.  Become an evangelist and expert in your own company and promote yourself while promoting your organization.  See what your company is involved in and partake in those events.

In the process of networking you will find companies you equally admire and those employees are the people you would like to know better. The good word you put out there will come back around to you if (or when) the time arises.

Who do you know?
