Super Tuesday? Yes It Was: InfoComm 2012 Day 1 Wrap-Up

Wow.  To say that this show is massive is an understatement. This is my first year at InfoComm and I have a feeling I’ll only be able to experience a small portion of everything this show has to offer.  The show is split into separate halls, so you really do need a map (or phone app) to navigate the show floor.

While the show officially kicks off today, there were sessions throughout the day called “Super Tuesday”.  Alan C. Brawn from Brawn Consulting led a presentation on digital signage by discussing the future of AV.  Next, we heard all about best practices in the field of audio technology.  My favorite quote from that session was, “Audio is so important to video communications.  Do you know what you call video with no audio?  Surveillance.”

Finally, the day wrapped with an absolutely awesome talk by Scott R. Sharer. His presentation was anything but conventional and had everyone’s attention from the very beginning. It was like watching a Hells Angel wearing a tie flipping through a PowerPoint presentation from notes he had scrawled on a napkin. I just couldn’t turn away. You could feel his passion for the industry in everything he said. Scott touched on so many new inventions in such a short time I had a hard time capturing all of them, but here’s a short list:

• nPower PEG
• Liquid Metal Batteries from a gentleman named Professor Sadoway
• 3D printing
• Nokia Tattoo based vibrating phones
• Thimbles for the blind
• Tobii eye-controlled computers
• Dragon Translation Software
• Cloud video solutions, including a live demo of LifeSize Connections

Scott’s call to everyone in the room (and I’m paraphrasing here) was to get excited, use their brains, figure out how to make all this technology work together the way customers want it to and to stop “giving the industry away to people who haven’t earned it”. Right on, Scott. Right on.
