Virtual Field Trip Extravaganza - "The World is Your Canvas"

September 7, 2012

Welcome back to school! As you start your 2012-2013 school year, we hope you’re able to join us once a month for a virtual field trip extravaganza! We've even given each month a theme to help plan your lessons around them in advance, if you choose. We’ll kick-off the series on September 7, 2012 by exploring art in a variety of ways—from museums to caricature artists and more!

Not familiar with virtual field trips? No problem. A virtual field trip happens in the comfort of your classroom, library or auditorium via the power of live video. Review clips from previous Extravaganzas here.

All of the field trips will be streamed live on this page, so grab a computer and get ready for some fun for your class! If you have a video system, you can also dial in live (first come first served) to interact with the presenter by dialing bridge 207.114.244.143##1003.

Schedule:

  • 9:00 am CDT Cleveland Museum of Art- "A is for Animal" (geared towards preK-2nd grades) This lively 30-minute videoconference introduces young viewers to real and imaginary animals found in sculpture and paintings at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Students learn why animals are important to different cultures, and how artists capture the appearance and behavior of these animals.
  • 10:00 am CDT Cleveland Museum of Art- "Ancient American Art: The Aztec and their Ancestors" (Geared towards 7th- 12th grades) This lesson introduces the art of selected cultures in ancient Mesoamerica (today, Mexico, Guatemala, and adjacent countries). Objects of ceramic, gold, and stone (including jade) shed light on religion and rulership among the Aztec, Maya, and others in the centuries before European contact. Students learn to think critically as they analyze art works and their meanings.
  • 11:00 am-1:00 pm CDT Caricature Artist- at LifeSize headquarters. If you have video equipment, you're encouraged to dial into our bridge to have portraits drawn by a virtual caricature artist. Our artist will draw the pictures on a digital sketch pad, and all pictures will be available to download or print, if you'd like. If you don't have video equipment, watching the artist capture the essence of a person in just a few minutes live is a spectacle you won't want to miss.
  • 1:00 pm CDT Cleveland Museum of Art- "Contemporary Art" (Geared towards 4-12th grades) Discover the stimulating and diverse art of the later twentieth century. Beginning with the mid century action painter Jackson Pollock, students encounter styles ranging from Abstraction to Pop Art to variations of Realism. Painting and sculpture by artists represented in the collection of The Cleveland Museum of Art are presented along with information about selected techniques used to create these works.
  • 2:00 pm CDT Cleveland Museum of Art- "Knights, Castles, and Kings" (Geared towards K-5th grades) Knights in shining armor, legendary queens, towering castles, and fantastic beasts populate the pages of fairy tales and capture our imagination. But where does the fantasy merge with fact? In this program, students are introduced to noble life in the Middle Ages through arms, armor, and courtly and religious objects in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. They observe, comment on what they see, question, and draw conclusions about the role of castles, knights, and kings in medieval society.
