Author Arthur C. Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick worked together on the future-fiction classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. The film and novel were both released in 1968 and depicted the exploration of a mysterious black monolith in a manned mission to Jupiter.

The human members of the mission interact with their ship’s artificial intelligence system, HAL 9000 (Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer), who, after a series of malfunctions, chooses to kill the crew to protect its own programmed orders.
