Video conferencing etiquette doesn’t have to be tricky. It’s quite simple actually. To make things easy for you, we’ve compiled a few etiquette do’s when on a video call.

1. Be mindful of eating. The rules around eating while in a meeting can be tricky to follow at times. For example, if it’s a very formal board meeting then choosing to eat a sandwich might not be the best idea. However, if your meeting is at noon and you want to grab a bite to eat, go for it! Just remember to use your best judgment in these situations.

2. Speak naturally. What, you can’t hear me?! Well, I can hear you just fine. Yelling into your device won’t allow your video call partners to hear you any better. Before you start to talk loudly, you might want to consider if you’re having technical difficulties. Is your microphone hooked up? Are you on mute? Troubleshoot those errors before you jump on your video call.

3. Dress to impress. When dressing for the day you should consider if you’d wear that particular outfit into the office. Bonus: you really only have to be professional from the waist up. Keep patterns to a minimum also. They can cause some crazy things to happen visually.

4. Make sure you’re always looking at the camera. Don’t let your eyes gaze to your phone or any other distractions around you. You should also minimize the amount of distractions around you while you’re on your video call. This lets the other participants know that you’re engaged in the conversation.
